I really wanted to rate this book higher than I did. It was the perfect read for the end of summer, headed into fall. I loved the multiple timelines and didn’t want to put it down, but by the end of it, I wanted to throw my book and was shaking my head at the male main character. I think I just wanted more, and didn’t like the way it ended.
Our main characters Fern and Will, meet 10 years ago, have one day together and agree to meet up a year later at her family lake resort. When he doesn’t show, she’s forced to move on, but can’t stop thinking about him and the night they had together. Fast forward to present day, Fern’s mother has passed and she has to decide if she’s going to keep the resort or sell it and return to her life in the city. Who walks in, none other than Will. Seeing him again brings up all of the feelings she’s stuffed down, and she has to decide not only what to do with the resort, but if she’s willing to let Will back into her life.
This story is told in present time, 9-10 years in the past, and in journal entries from her mother’s diary. I loved the way the author developed the story, revealing hints and clues to things that happened and how our characters got to where they are. Like I said earlier, I just wanted more from the story. I also wanted to shake Will and tell him to just speak up and let Fern into his life. I enjoyed it more than Every Summer After, but the story was just ok for me. It definitely gives you all of the late summer on the lake vibes, so it’s the perfect read for your next summer vacation.
