Reign
Reign by Katharine McGee
My rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
This is the fourth book in the American Royals series, and if we are to believe the Author’s Note at the end, it could be the last? Although, I feel like Katharine McGee has said this series was ending after book two and we she gave us more, so hopefully this isn’t the last we are hearing from the Washingtons.
The overall premise for this series is set in a world were America is a monarchy rather than a democracy, dating all the way back to George Washington. It is set in present day and follows the children of the first family, Beatrice (the heir), her twin siblings Samantha and Jefferson, as well as their friends Nina and Daphne. It’s told from multiple points of view throughout the series and you follow along their relationships, antics, and see what it’s like to be an American Royal.
I was super excited for this book, and remember LOVING the other books in the series, especially Books one and three, but I didn’t really love this one. Book three ended on such a cliffhanger that I coulod’t wait to read this one when my library hold came through. I even had its release date marked on my calendar to make sure I had my hold in to get it that much sooner!
Trying to write a review for the fourth book in a series without spoilers is difficult. We pick up right where we left off from Rivals, but all the drama and twists that made book three so great seemed to be missing in this book. I got to the halfway point of this book and realized nothing really happened to advance the story, and I figured out the “twist,” if we can even call it that, well in advance of the reveal.
It did feel like the author wrapped up each storyline with a nice little bow, but left the door open for future books. Fingers crossed that there will be another one, because I want more from these characters! I’m not ready for their stories to be over.
